Topic: “Bodies Come in All Sizes: The Assessment and Treatment of Body Image Disturbances.”

Presentation Summary:

My presentation will involve clinical and case examples along with theoretical approaches.  I have been facilitating body image groups for the past 19 years and currently lead five body image groups a week on all levels of care and I have a wealth of experience from working with young girls and woman that are struggling with their bodies.  My presentation is for an intermediate to an advanced audience and will primarily be didactic but I will involve the audience throughout the presentation and I am an interactive and dynamic speaker.

The main goal of this presentation is to educate professionals on how to assess and treat body image disturbances across the weight spectrum.  The presentation will focus on factors that contribute to negative body image and how therapists can effectively assess the influence of these factors in regards to the patients they treat.  This presentation will also address the impact of the media and the diet industry, and how dieting leads to a loss of self-esteem and not necessarily weight. This presentation will provide information on individual and group assessment techniques and interventions for body image disturbances that professionals can take home and use in their daily practices.

  1. Learn a variety of techniques to adequately assess body image disturbances in patients with eating disorders.
  2. Understand factors that contribute to the development on body image disturbances.
  3. Learn effective techniques to treat body image disturbances in patients with eating disorders in individual or group setting.
