Topic: Orthorexia Update: The Scoop on the “Healthy” Eating Disorder

Description:

As eating disorder professionals we encounter individuals seeking health through extreme restrictive eating and sometimes refer to this as the unofficial eating disorder “orthorexia.”

Speaker Jessica Setnick published the first proposed diagnostic criteria for orthorexia nervosa in 2013, based on the term coined by Dr. Steven Bratman in the 1990s to describe “an unhealthy obsession with healthy eating.”

In this Orthorexia Update, Setnick will provide us with the latest information on the international panel working to propose orthorexia as a DSM diagnosis, discuss the similarities and differences between orthorexia and other eating disorders, and provide suggestions for how to help our clients who struggle with orthorexic tendencies.

Objectives:

  1. Describe proposed criteria for a new diagnosis of orthorexia.
  2. Differentiate between orthorexia and anorexia nervosa.
  3. Guide a patient exhibiting signs of orthorexia to separate nutritional intake from non-nutrition issues and manage both more productively.
